Italian artist who belonged to the group known as the Macchiaioli. He received his early training in painting from his brother Vincenzo. He suffered the loss of his right eye at the Garibaldi campaign, 1860. While his early paintings were interiors, he quickly became attracted to the practice of painting landscapes en plein air. He died of a rabies bite from his dog at the age of thirty-two in Florence. His paintings are characterized by their bold treatment of light effects.
